celyncodex 's review for:
Red Gambit
by Luke R. Mitchell
Mitchell's writing is fast, snappy, suck-you-in writing. Very much a book where you just keep reading because the pages are easy to turn and you need to know what happens next.
Would have liked this a little more meaty, in terms of character development and relationships, because we get teased with hints of it - is Mitchell too afraid to spoil the lighthearted snark? Well, he shouldn't be because it would have balanced out nicely. That said, I did enjoy the banter, the conversations felt like exactly the kind you would be having in this particular flavour of post-apocalypse.
The ending was...interesting, not exactly a cliffhanger, but yet another example of this seeming trend for books to JUST STOP HALFWAY THROUGH. Authors really need to learn that when characters solve one problem, it doesn't necessarily mean that this is a good place for the book to stop.
To sum up my feelings - this was like one of those super-fancy meals that's gone in two bites. Delicious, tantalising.....but not the filling, nutritious meal it could have been, if only there was a little bit MORE.
