The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

2.0

this is not special or unique. it’s ok for what it is. it’s entertaining but completely forgettable.

there was no depth to the characters or the relationships they build. they felt flat throughout the whole book and made it impossible for me to connect to or even care for any of them.

i knew going into this book that i wasn’t going to love it, but i thought it would be at least fun to read. nope.
i was prepare to love jude like everyone that reads this trilogy seems to. nope.
jude, although i can understand why people like her, felt like every other bland ya protagonist.

one thing that i knew was going to make this reading experience not the best for me was the enemies to lovers romance everyone talks about. why? because i freaking *hate* enemies to lovers.
and yeah, okay, i hate it but i can appreciate any trope if it’s done well. i know that the second book probably develops their relationship more but as for an introduction to the characters and their romance... this wasn’t special.

i think that if holly black took more time to develop her characters, the romance would feel more natural and the story wouldn’t be so boring.

i didn’t hate this book. i didn’t like or care for anything here and the writing wasn’t the best, but it was ok for what it intended to be. nothing special or unique, but fun. i literally read this in one day.

i feel like this review was very badly written but my thoughts are all over the place and i’m writing them as they come, so sorry about that.

2 solid stars for this book. won’t be reading the other two, obviously.
