The Thousand Names by Django Wexler
3.0

What a crazy reading experience! I started this book not wanting to like it, I didn't like the cover, I thought Django Wexler was a badly made up pseudonym and my goodreads friends' reviews were all over the place. Turns out Django is his middle name based on a stage name made up by a jazz musician, all of my goodreads friends were right (more on that later) and the cover....well, call it merely average.

I did get sucked into the story and characters right away, Winter and Janus are very cool, Marcus takes some getting used to but Fitz is great. Then I got seriously bored by the battles and sort of skimmed through the middle, I think that decision made the rest of the book better. I got re-engaged once the
Spoiler super human, demon, Foer brother guy tried to assassinate Janus
Turns out my friends who like the characters were dead on, and my friends who found the battle scenes tiresome were also quite correct.

It was kind of an odd blend of flintlock fantasy and arabian nights. I think McClellan does it much better but this was better than I expected. The loose ends and YouKneeK and Sabrina's positive ratings might help me pick up the next book but it might have to go on sale.

Not bad, I think many will enjoy it but if I could recommend only one flintlock fantasy it would be Promise of Blood by McClellan
