Spoilers for Steelheart below!

We pick up the story with David narrating again. He and the rest of the Reckoners are now an overt presence in the infrastructure of Newcago and are actively accepting, but screening, new and returning residents to the city. As part of a standard intake procedure David notices someone suspicious who ends up being an Epic, Mitosis, with a bone to pick with the Reckoners.

This short-story is very much more of the same from Steelheart, but with an upgrade to the analogy-jokes and both a slightly harder focus on the science of the magic as well as more hand-waving about the science of the magic
