The Queer Art of Failure by Jack Halberstam

3.0

Very entertaining for a queer theory book! I loved the queer readings of pixar movies and the thoughts about how queerness is essentially a failure to conform to societal norms. At times however, I felt like the thread of the argument got lost in descriptions of fine art and the ties between the art and the theme of queer failure seemed a little forced. A theory book has never made me laugh out loud before and this book reconfigured my thoughts about what failure means as a queer person in a cis-het society just as I hoped it would. However, I felt like the focus on gays and lesbians only and their gnc-ness and the lack of discussion of trans people aside from a few throw away lines here and there was a disservice to the topic and to trans readers. Trans people are failures too!!
