Atmosphere explores the space boom of the 80s and how it was for females, especially two queer females, trying to get into space as they navigate their careers, families, friends, and love life.
TJR is fantastic at research and creating characters in a setting that feels like reality. Any TJR character feels like a real person to me and she succeeded in doing that again in Atmoshpere! The characters were well crafted and felt like
People you would actually meet.
While I love the characters, this was a very romance heavy book and I was a little disappointed when the astronaut training space plot took a side role to the romance. The book is pretty well paced but in the middle it dragged on for me because it was more about Vanessa and Joan’s relationship and other personal dramas that seemed to be a little long in comparison to the space plot going on at the same time.
Another area the pacing was a little off was the ending. The story felt so drawn out at points but then ended so abruptly I still had lots of questions. I see why it ended the way it did, it was very dramatic, but it was these overdramatic scenes that took me out of the story.
While this one was a little too dramatic for my tastes (it’s very romance heavy) it was still a great book and I’d recommend to those that like historical romances or TJR. Carrie Soto is still my all time favorite by this author, but Atmosphere was also still worth a read!
