kastrel 's review for:
Jamrach's Menagerie
by Carol Birch
This is a brutal, punishing, desolate, book. Do not be taken in by the first few relatively cheery chapters, it will scour your heart clean, drag you under cold water and leave you washed up half-drowned by the end of it. I started it ignorant of this, and I do not wish you the same fate.
I wrote this review 9 years ago, and the horror of this book has never left me. I think, in some ways, I never got over the feeling of reading it. Images from the last third remain in my memory. Songs mentioned in the book being me near to a panic attack. Before I read this book, I didn't think anything I could read could have such a profound, damaging effect on my psyche.
