This book is very self-aware, very millenial and very current. It knows what it's doing, and it does it well, it targets a certain audience, and basically memes on a lot of 'current' events, to the point that I think either it was supposed to be read as soon as it came out, or you've gotta be terminally online to get which event in current history it's talking about.
Also. It's cozy sci-fi!! I've been searching for that particular flavor for awhile now, and I'm very pleasantly surprised by it, I love the diverse cast, the self-insert MC, the wish-fulfillment of it all...
One thing that let me down was the humor. I thought, judging by the reviews, that this book would be funnier than it was. The only time I genuinely let out a laugh was the Edward's tumescent cloaca moment. What a stunning string of words that is.
Huge end of the book spoiler ahead:
I was so sad that Tom died. Like damn. Genuine sadness. I was lowkey shipping him with Jamie just for the cozy meet-cute serotonin - there's no actual romance in the book, it was all in my head, but still. That death scene kinda hit me hard.
