Mockingbird, Vol. 2: My Feminist Agenda by Chelsea Cain

2.0

Vol. 1 ★★★★☆
Vol. 2 ★★☆☆☆

Sad to say, I did not enjoy this short 3-issue volume of Mockingbird. It's so unfortunate to see a title that started so promisingly fall so far, though to be fair, Marvel's early cancellation of the series is probably largely to blame. The art is fantastic, and the humor lands, but the plot... meh. Mockingbird didn't even get to kick any ass!

This volume is basically a whodunnit aboard a tropical cruise in the Bermuda Triangle, and seems to rest entirely on inside jokes and Bobbi Morse's past relationships. Cain clearly needed to wrap up quickly, and so chose to throw anything and everything at the script she wanted instead of creating a plausible story arc. She admits as much in her thank-you note at the end of issue #8: "We knew [#8] was going to be our last[...] I figured, what the heck, right? I just put it all in. Mercorgis. Ghost pirates. Alpine threesomes." Granted, #8 was fun and ridiculous, but the whole arc of the volume was pretty nonsensical and a little boring overall. I wish I could say I enjoyed it.
