alr16 's review for:
Project Hail Mary
by Andy Weir
I put off reading this book for as long as I did because The Martian is one of my favorite books and honestly I didn't think this one would compare. I thought it would just be another iteration of the Martian because how much can you really change of the formula of "guy alone in space"
A lot, apparently.
I think the format was good, I'm iffy about the pacing in general, the plot was fun, all in all it felt a lot more speculative science fiction than the Martian. I'm a little mixed on the ending, not the choice Ryland made, but rather that there was this catastrophe presented at the 11th hour, though it serves the story well.
EDIT:I can't stop thinking about how unexpected dark the story gets. It manages to keep the "oh the world is ending" pretty abstract so it doesn't take away from the feel-good "he's saving the world and making a friend in the vacuum of space" of it all. Then you learn that he was forced on a suicide mission AND forcefully given amnesia so he wouldn't remember that he was sent to die and, that's real and dark and unavoidable.
A lot, apparently.
