This is a really enjoyable, quick gothic horror read. I haven’t read Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher, but this retelling stands perfectly on its own — easy to follow, atmospheric, and unique.
I loved how unsettling yet accessible the story was, and how creative the author is with her eerie, understated worldbuilding. Another thing I deeply appreciate about T. Kingfisher is her thoughtful inclusivity; the protagonist’s gender identity is written respectfully and naturally, which adds meaningful representation.
A perfect choice if you’re in the mood for something dark and strange but don’t want to commit to a long, heavy book.
