Shalvis writes good characters, good chemistry, and good family dynamics; I always enjoy her books.  That said, this was written in 2011, and it shows.  Today's readers need to suspend their disbelief and be willing to grit their teeth and push past things that feel cringy today. Like he's a veterinarian and has the fighting skills of an MMA champ?  Or Jade was "bred" to be a CFO?  (Her thoughts about herself and her place in her family were just strange.) The book also plays with Jade's  trauma in a way I wasn't completely comfortable with, so looking up trigger warnings might be a good idea for a sensitive reader.
