Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff

5.0

This book is haunting. I loved the character development and felt like the writing was exquisite. I loved the style of the novel where you got to experience the same (and different) events through different perspectives. Given the amount of deviation in other readers’ reviews, I went into this story not sure if I would like it and to a degree, not wanting to like it, in a way thinking that my opinion of it would somehow define or and make or break my place in the world as I didn’t want to be part of one party or the other, I wanted to be indifferent.

This novel though sucked me in. Lotto’s story, The Fates, would have been enough for me. It was complex and included moments of light and laughter as well as the accurately conveyed the emotions that came along with the feelings of loss, anxiety of being left by those whom you so dearly love, or the deep seeded fear that one is unworthy of belonging. When the novel shifted over to Mathilde’s story, The Furies, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Could I really learn anything new? Would I enjoy hearing the same story from a new perspective? I was so wrong. Mathilde’s story is even more interesting than Lotto’s and honestly completely unexpected. What evolved from the latter half of the book was spellbinding, the power of the secrets almost suffocating at times as I yearned to know more, to draw the lines between all the different points that had been so carefully laid out throughout the novel.

Final note – listened to as an audiobook and enjoyed the narration a lot. Appreciated that they had two actors – truly felt like this book came to life.
