A surprisingly relevant vignette out of the life of the eponymous character, a real estate broker in the 1920s. While superficially episodic, the chapters of the book do have a certain rise and fall momentum. The language hits a light but acerbic tone that was quite enjoyable, although a lot of the characters' dialog is, intentionally or not, colloquial to a century ago and increasingly hard to penetrate.
It's interesting to read a period piece written very much in the period where it occurred; knowing how the world of both author and characters is on the cusp of changing completely somehow made the characters feel more fleshed out and sympathetic.
