This is a "take what you will" kind of book and the "brief" history in the title is definitely worth emphasizing if you wish to read this. Though the author has researched and drawn upon works of others, it can't be ignored that there are many topics that were simply glossed over and some claims felt baseless and unsupported at times. Perhaps it's due to the fact that human history is so rich with detail, that it's difficult to condense it in a concise way to convey the author's message. Perhaps it's the result of history being written by the victors. Perhaps it's that a significant of human history was passed down by the oral tradition or simply lost to time. Perhaps it's bias as a result of the author's own worldview, interpretation of history, and their understanding of our current society and culture. Regardless of all this, I think this book has brought more clarity (albeit from a privileged perspective) about the bigger themes and theories of human history and inspires me to learn more about the rich history that was minimally acknowledged and dive deeper wth more detail. The book is good if you can be open-minded and zoom out of your everyday life. But approach with healthy skepticism and critically challenge the claims and seek to learn how this understanding contributes to our modern human social structure and society.
