While presented as a fictionalized novel, there isn't much character development or storyline (other than "WWII is happening"). Reads like a series of rather disjointed episodes based on anecdotes from a number of people who lived through WWII-- which, turns out that's exactly what it is (the author heard relatives' stories during a family reunion, and decided someone should put them into a book).

While the stories are interesting insights into people's experiences, it would have been more engaging had the author placed those experiences within an actual story, filling in fictionalized parts or doing research to fill in details about what various situations may have been like.
