Dream Boy by Madelyn Rosenberg, Mary Crockett
2.0

I received an ARC of this book, courtesy of NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.

This book intrigued me because it had the element of magic -- a girl dreams a boy into existence, as well as an element of bizarre consequences or a creepy factor if you will (aka nightmares have come through, too). I enjoyed the fact that it wasn't heavy on the teen romance although there was the inevitable triangle --> girl dreams her ideal boy, but she has a guy best friend clearly in love with her.

Annabelle has to face her nightmares in order to save herself and her friends. Sounds creepy right? Unfortunately the pace of the book was both too fast and too slow. I never got swept up in the story and didn't find myself caring about any of the characters. There was little development character wise but at the same time the book felt like it was trying to be mystical, or the next big YA read. Also, I get wary of books written in first person because they are hard to maintain the right tenses and this book kept jumping from present tense to past and it was hard to get into the rhythm.

E.G. I knew it had been four years since my dad had left and these things happen and blah blah blah. But it still didn't seem right that he was marrying someone else. My mom hasn't even gone out on a date.

I found it odd as well, that while the plot was original and fresh, it was at times over explained and then easily accepted. Annabelle confides in a friend about her dream boy, and there is no hesitation in belief from her friends. If you're friend said she had a dream about a hunky guy and then he appeared at school the next day, would you believe her? You'd at least question it I would think right? At other times the dream boy Martin is trying to explain the other world-- the dream world and the description of how it works is cumbersome and too muddled. I kind of gave up eventually and just went with it.

For me I got lost, it wasn't creepy enough, captivating enough or mysterious enough for me to want to recommend it to anyone. It read a little young for me, and so if I were to recommend it I would do so for preteens perhaps. There's nothing in here that they wouldn't understand or would be too "adult content". I wish I could have liked this book more.
