All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
5.0
This book covers lots of deep subject matter like dealing with mental illness and the grief of losing a loved one. The story is told from alternating perspectives of two teenages, Violet and Finch, who are going through many emotional hardships.
Warning! Spoilers ahead if you read between the lines....
The book discusses why some people consider suicide, the stigma they face and the reality that survivors of suicide have to face now that someone they love is gone. It is a deeply moving story that left me with a lasting impression. I didn't have this book spoiled for me before I read it and that made the ending so much more of a shock and far more heartbreaking.
All the Bright Places has very in depth characters and themes that make it interesting from start to finish. There is lots of detail about the lives of both main characters and what they are thinking throughout the story. I like that the characters are flawed it makes them realistic and interesting. They didn't need to be perfect because that makes them more emotionally impactful.
I thought this this book was a good representation of how messy everyone's lives are regardless of how much we like to pretend otherwise. It deals with serious issues in a realistic and heartfelt way. Even during the sad parts of this book (...and believe me, there are bloody sad parts) it remains optimistic and inspires the idea that there are bright places even in dark times. Yes, I did quote the book there.
I’ve never wanted to move into my closet as much as I do right now.
Overall it was a fascinating and beautiful portrayal of how teenagers deal with mental illness affecting themselves and the ones they love. I am very glad I read it and reading it was a lot better than watching the film so I am very glad I read the book first.
