Age of Legend by Michael J. Sullivan

5.0

I can't get over how incredible this series is, and how it continually makes my heart break and swell. I always have high standards when it comes to Michael J. Sullivan books, and they are always met and surpassed. AGE OF LEGEND is no different. I was still in recovery from the ending of AGE OF WAR, and the book wasted no time in addressing that hurt and really playing on the grief I was feeling (I really loved certain characters, and more on that later). From there, I was drawn back into a magical, beautiful world with new legends and myths and stories, and taken on various adventures and tribulations both physical and emotional.

The time jump in part two definitely helped show how certain characters had grown since the events of the previous book, and added to the weight of certain actions. While the book was fairly low on action compared to previous instalments, the draw has always been the characters. Their relationships and personal conflicts are so enthralling, and even adds sympathy to the villains. I honestly have such a hard time selecting my favourite character stories: Brin and Suri continue to grow as powerful women, and Tesh will be a tormented character going forth, and I can only hope that his story earns a satisfying ending. I also found a lot of interest in Moya and Tressa (Tressa of all people), and can only hope it's explored more. That said, aside from the opening, it was Persephone's chapters who always brought tears to my eyes and made me openly weep at some point. That's the power Michael J. Sullivan has given his characters.

As always, his writing is beautiful and flowing. The reader truly feels the magic and love and hints embedded in these pages. Even if the final pages make me panic and stressed for basically everyone. I also deeply appreciate all the bonus content added that give an insight into how he approaches his craft. The Sullivans (as his wife Robin provides an afterword that reflects how many of us fans will feel) care about their fans and make me eager to see where this truly epic story goes.

Anyone who knows me is completely aware that Michael J. Sullivan is one of my favourite fantasy authors, and books like these are way. The story is fulfilling and engrossing, the characters are unique and strong in many ways, and the writing is simply too captivating to stop. I highly recommend that everyone who loves rich fantasy picks up these books and experiences all the joy and heartbreak that I have. Not a series to be missed.
