Fans of dark and gritty fantasy romance, Lore of the Wicked Wood is your next must-read. It is dark, gripping, sensual, angsty, suspenseful, and an all around fantastic read.
LOTWW follows Everrine, a death touched fae on a path of self destruction in an effort to escape her fear, grief, and dangerous magic, and Atlas, the prince of pleasure who hides his true self behind his playboy reputation. Outwardly, they loathe each other, but there is some serious mutual pining happening in secret that is angsty and delicious. But he is her brother’s best friend and has vowed to protect her from everyone, including himself. Their chemistry is electric and, in true Hillary Raymer fashion, their banter is sharp and witty. Theirs is a slooow burn, tense, and sometimes painful romance that had me craving more.
I’ve said it before, and I will continue to shout it from the rooftops: Hillary’s world building is exquisite. It is lush and descriptive with interesting and unique magic systems, and LOTWW is no exception. It is intricate but still easy to follow. The eerie, provocative, and suspenseful vibes are immaculate, and the overall storyline is enthralling. I seriously did not want to put this book down.
Beyond the sensuous and teasing romance between Everinne and Atlas, there is a lot happening in the city of Prava. Powerful immortals are disappearing without a trace, the surrounding forest presents a sinister and ever growing threat, and the enigmatic underground club, the Mystic Obscura, holds a tempting and dangerous allure. And our two forbidden lovers find themselves caught up in it all. The plot twists and turns deliver an emotional punch, and the cliffhanger at the end is as wicked as wood that is awakening.
If you like dark, twisty fantasy and steamy, slow burn romance that make you feel all of the things, you do not want to miss out on this book!
I received an advanced reader copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
