Star Child: A Biographical Constellation of Octavia Estelle Butler by Ibi Zoboi
5.0
" STARDUST
What if on the day she was born
there was a quiet storm of tiny
shimmering dust that settled on
tree leaves, on flower petals,
on rooftops, on the ground, on
the shiny work shoes, and
glided through open windows
to settle on hardwood
floors? Maybe there was a
storm of stardust and
this was how Laurice James Butler and
Octavia Margaret Butler gave
birth to a baby girl named
Octavia Estelle Butler,
a star child."
This is a beautiful "biographical constellation" of one of the scifi/speculative fiction GOATs, and a must-read for fans of Ms. Octavia E. Butler.
A unique experience, Star Child combin is a biography-in-verse, with pages of prose peppered throughout. It's lovely, and I enjoyed the photos, pages of writing in Octavia's own hand, and Ibi Zoboi's personal experiences with the inimitable and pioneering Ms. Butler.
Song stuck in my head reading this:
