Samuel Pepys: The Unequalled Self
by Claire Tomalin
A loveable arsehole from a few hundred years ago, Samuel Pepys reminds me a little of a human Pooh Bear. He cheats on his wife, he gets excited about his food, he buries his cheese in the garden to protect it from the great fire of London; he is very human, fallible and relatable. This book squeezes time and makes the 1600s feel not that long ago at all.
