The Poppy Fields by Nikki Erlick

Plot or Character Driven: A mix

A huge field of vibrant poppies seemed pretty inviting. I could easily visualize this beautiful place in a desert of California.

Then there was the imagination of an experimental healing center. It was where patients would be positioned comfortably to sleep for a few weeks and then awakened fully rejuvenated from grief and other forms of emotional stress. It was a well-researched concept translated to a peaceful state of mind but there was always the possibility of side effects.

It started with two strangers at the Kansas airport who were irritated when it was impossible to get a flight. They rented a car for a driving trip to California and eventually ended up with a car packed with one dog and four people who became friends. They were all connected with questions related to this mysterious place.

While it’s rather a far-fetched idea, it’s a different way of examining the complexities of grief. All the talk about sleep made me want to take a nap which made this a slow read. However, I enjoyed getting to know the characters and how it ended.
