Patriotism by Yukio Mishima

This follows a lieutenant as he and his wife resolve to commit seppuku after a revolt within his battalion against the imperial command.
I didn’t love it. It’s chronicles very outdated and misogynistic views of and for women in marriage, which I know are as was believed at the time. It also is very graphic on seppuku which I would not be against had we had any meditations on the lieutenant, the wife’s or even Mishima’s philosophies on patriotism beyond just seppuku. That’s what I thought we would get from this novella, an exploration of what patriotism means under empire but it’s disappointingly not what I found here.
