Brown Girls by Daphne Palasi Andreades
3.0

A recent read! This book reads like a love letter to first and second generation POC immigrants to the US. It narrates the growing up experience of a cast of girls: from childhood, school, university, dating, marriage, till they become mothers. There is a poetic quality to the prose and it’s very easy to get into the rythm.
.
My only critique about the book is that it talks about a very specific kind of girl: one that has an addict brother, one that went back to homeland to find themselves, one that got married to a white dude. The irony of the book is in talking about the experience of “brown girls” as a collective, certain nuances are lost. However, this does not mean the book disrespected anyone. Like I said, this definitely is a love letter. Very touching and heartfelt. I’m sure a lot of readers would see parts of themselves reflected on the pages.
.
If you want to read more on contemporary POC immigrants experience, this is a book you can start with. If you are already an advanced reader, then this book may be too much of a beginner’s class for you.
