The City & the City by China Miéville
5.0

This was such a fun ride! Usually I’m not a fan of crime stories, not a fan when the main character can make jumps to conclusions that seem pretty far fetched, but the crime story is more of a perk to this book. The world, the creativity and thought out laws of this world is what blew me away. He thought of everything in this world, he has to have maps and piles of notes of what if’s. The love and attention this author has for this world is obvious in every page. It felt real, unbelievable but explained in an almost scientific way. My mind understood but yet teetering that line of not.

There is a murder and they need to find out what happened. Simple enough. But the real story is the twin cities. A city within a city. That share streets but aren’t allowed to notice the other. They are separated by speech, fashions, walks, colors, names. You see each other but have learned to unsee. If you don’t unsee? If you speak to someone in the other city? If you take something from another city even if it sits next to you on the park bench? You breach. Breach will be coming for you.

It was a wild, mind blowing right. It felt like I was reading an art piece, this to me is what books are all about, to take me to another world. Show me something a normal daydream couldn’t conjure up on its own. I can’t wait to read his other books.
