The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store
by James McBride
The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store is both interesting and chaotic. I learned a lot about the relationships between Black and Jewish community connections in the early part of the 20th century; what people of color and folks with disabilities endured at the time; and period history specific to Pennsylvania.
There’s jazz, dance, and multicultural relationships. What’s not to love? I did connect with the story and appreciate the context, but there were simply too many characters. I was often confused and felt like some characters came and went as a narrative device. Still, a solid book. I’d probably rate The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store as 3.5 if I had the option.
