American Dirt
by Jeanine Cummins
Roxanne Gay said ‘nope’ to this book but I loved it. Apparently, I’m not supposed to have loved it because the author (who is white) had no right to write it and because she did it anyway it’s riddled with things she might have written differently if it was her own experience.
I get it, but also. Fuck that.
I don’t have time to hate on a white lady who told a story that isn’t her own because she was moved by other stories that weren’t her own. Sorry what exactly do we think other fiction writers are doing?
I’ll tell you what a lot of them ARE NOT doing - they aren’t writing about things this important.
Read it for yourself. Don’t let the story telling police tell you how to find and make meaning in the world.
Then read something else from a different perspective.
Think for yourself.
Repeat.
