History without tears ... This novel about Elizabeth of York fleshes out very knowledgeably the shadowy figure of Edward IV's eldest daughter - and incidentally mother of Henry VIII. It was a turbulent era in England, with stability some way off during the reigns of the last Plantagenets and first Tudors. Women were basically pawns in the marriage game, and Alison Weir evokes vividly the emotions that Elizabeth and her family probably experienced.
This is a first-rate historical novel, and I see it is the first of a series, so there is more to look forward to.
