Middlegame by Seanan McGuire

Here are my brief, pre-book club, thoughts:

I didn't know what to expect reading this book, especially given the creepy cover. I knew nothing about the author, although in front of big is a huge list of her other works, so I knew she was prolific, and the back inside of the jacket lists several of her laurels. I didn't know what a hand of glory was and so that was the first thing I looked up online. Ok, creepy!

The chapters flow well and the progression of the relationship between the two main characters, works! I found Dodger and Roger both believable and relatable. They could be any of us, even while at the same time they have prodigy qualities.

The science fiction/fantasy elements are mixed so well with actual mathematics and linguistics to make me think, wow, this alchemy stuff might actually be real.

For a change, I'm going into book club not intending to depend on the others for what I missed or to help me understand or to help me appreciate. I'm already going into discussion with a 5/5 rating. But I'm certain my fellow clubbers will help me to gain even more appreciation because no matter how much I enjoy something, I always miss something!
