I'm not exactly sure how to rate this book because there are things I love and things I don't love. I love the writing style. The voice is so strong and there is so much amazing imagery. Lisa Taddeo is undoubtedly talented, and I plan to read more of her books.
I also highly recommend it because I enjoyed it, and I think lots of other women/femmes would, too. Definitely read trigger warnings first to see if it's too much for you.
What I don't love is how the main character, Joan, mainly exists in proximity to men. Her every action and every word is about or motivated by a man. And I didn't see as much feminine rage as I felt I was promised. (I thought I chose this from a list about unhinged women, but I could be wrong.) I felt more rage on her behalf than I saw in her. If Joan has any rage, it seems directed more at women than men. Even the other two women in her life were only brought to her by the actions of men. I understand the trauma and products thereof, but the main character is unlikable to me because of how much importance she gives to men. She's supposed to be in her 30's, but seems much younger to me, which could be the result of the trauma. Idk, I'm not her therapist, nor would I want to be. The sympathy I have for her is slightly overshadowed by my desire to tell her to stay the fuck away from men for 99% of the book.
