THE MERMAIDS OH MY GOD I JUST LOVE THEM. AND ISMA STAYING! YES PLEASE! I was not expecting a new member to join the party but I’m so up for it, especially since she’s such a lovable character.
The damn kid disappeared once again. What a surprise! I don’t know why but he kind of annoys me, though maybe if his character ever gets to make a bit more sense my opinion might change. At least the characters are trying to answer the questions as well, making their own theories, which partially align with mine… though I guess there was no doubt that he somehow belonged to the spiritual world.
Needless to say the little unexpected snippet of Guts’s backstory was the real highlight of the volume. I found it bittersweet and moving, and a lot more metaphorical (or at least openly so) than most of the series. The cute little flower spirit was to me a clear personification of Guts’s inner child, whom he had to push back so much in order to survive it became something alien, foreign, almost external, but that he managed to inadvertently summon when he needed it. Though it might seem like Guts is watching his childhood die and letting it go in this arc, I don’t believe it can ever be really dead: after all, the flower still had a couple of petals left.
As always I’m curious to see what happens in the next chapter, and really excited to find out what Rickert’s comeback brings!
