A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
5.0
2020 Reading Rush book #1
Stories are wild creatures. When you let them loose, who knows what havoc they might wreak?

Well they can sure wreak my feelings.
I am a mess right now. I finished this book in a few hours but I’m a shucking mess. As I write this review, I am still bawling.
This would DEFINITELY be a 5 star if I hadn’t seen the adaptation countless times before. I clearly remember seeing these events happening on screen, but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t bawling for the last hundred or so pages.
This book... what’s there to hate? The writing is fantastic. The illustrations are beautiful. The story was powerful for such a short book.
I felt so connected to Conor — even if I haven’t experienced the impacts of cancer the way he did. It was a connection built from more personal reasons which I do not want to share.
If you haven’t read this book, please read it. ASAP. I’m still a mess.
