The Gifts of Happiness by Oliver Smuhar

5.0

“I’d sacrifice what makes me happy so that other people around me can be happier for a moment.”
- Oliver Smuhar, The Gifts of Happiness

I would like to thank Oliver Smuhar for giving me an opportunity to beta read this book and for giving me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The book starts with another adventure after meeting an old friend, Perry and the crew went to Central City to seek help from the Alchemist but during their time on Central City, Perry saw an assassin— Papercut, who is wearing a paper cloak and has two paper katanas ready to kill anyone in his way. The crew was also attacked by Masked Ones while they are on their way to Drewmora, the Blue City. Now it is up to Perry and his friends to stop Papercut and the Masked Ones.
I love the plot of the book since it has two major plots in the book that needs to be resolved and the way Oliver Smuhar wrote it was astonishing. As I continued reading through the book, I could see how these plots connects with each other making it one solid plot. I could also see where the series is heading to, since it was introduced in this book what the future plot may be, and I’m really looking forward to it since I’m intrigued on what will happen next. I was easily hooked with the series especially with how I connected with the characters. Furthermore, I love how there is depth with the characters and the author succeeded in bringing these characters to life. Which for me is a must since characters makes the books and plot more interesting if they have depth and life to it. The writing style also fits my taste since everything was well-thought-out, from events that happened in the first book we could still see how it affects this book. The pacing of the book was alright for me since it still answered the questions I’m seeking to answer.
This book will keep you guessing on what might happen next since there are a lot of unexpected twists and turns which makes the book more interesting, because you’re always guessing on what might happen next. The author also made me attached to every character in this book and that includes that antagonist. The backstory of the antagonist was what stuck to me the most.
The ending of the book was a bit comical for me since I wasn’t expecting that to happen and with how it ended, but it does make sense why it happened. I’m definitely going to read the third book once it’s out. I just want to read more of the characters and how they will continue with their lives—especially Zia. This book reminded me of the Shatter Me series because of the abilities the people have, and I’m a simp for that kind of stuff. But the overall plot and idea of the book was very unique and well executed. This series definitely deserves more attention and I would rate this a 5/5 stars and would definitely recommend it to people wanting to read something new.
