ghamr 's review for:
American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer
by Martin J. Sherwin, Kai Bird
It took me quite a while to get through this book, but it was definitely worth the time. Oppenheimer is a fascinating and complicated man.
Part of what, in my opinion, makes good book is whether or not it sparks interest in further reading. This book definitely did that for me. I would now like to learn more about McCarthyism, as well as its origins and its victims. I would also like to know more about the international politics surrounding the decision whether or not to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as I did not know that the Japanese were close to surrendering when the decision was made. I also did not know that the decision was made partly has a way of to keep Russia out of the picture(or at least that's what I understand from this book, further reading needed obviously). I'm also now interested in learning about Fermi and Dyson, whose names I know in connection with the Fermi paradox and Dyson spheres respectively, but otherwise I know very little about them.
Also: Strauss was a Grade A asshole.
