read on Nov 11 Ñ didn't realize was more young adult lit but still mostly enjoyable. Some really poignant moments, but also sometimes felt more aspirational, like Ko was trying to check a set number of political boxes / make overarching points that sometimes came at the expense of my reading. Maybe this is biased from 1) knowing about the deportation (which is supposed to be a big reveal?) before reading the novel and also 2) from a lukewarm review from a trusted reader. still enjoyable but probably will not reread anytime soon
