Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier
4.0

Not typically my thing, but by the last 30 pages or so I was very glad I read this. The copy I have has many marked passages from a previous reader, and I was curious why some things were marked. Remarkably, this reader didn’t mark the passages near the end that struck me as most powerful. I am a big fan of symbolism, and the idea of a maid/woman/mistress being taken advantage of, ruined, helpless, etc. was a hit with me. Though set in 1665ish, the message is relevant to modern times and how little human beings have changed when it comes to power and control. This is beautifully written and not altogether too daunting of a read.
