The characters in this novel behave so bizarrely and stupidly that the zealous and violent stalker was the only one I felt to be remotely understandable! At least he has a serious mental illness to explain his actions! We are never given such a revelatory window into the derangements of our supposedly rational petit-bourgeois protagonists.
