Britt-Marie Was Here
by Fredrik Backman
4.75 - Not quite as good as Ove, but a bit better than My Grandmother...
Fredrik Backman might be my new favorite author. I have read (and loved) all three of his (translated) books. Britt-Marie just made me feel everything - sadness, happiness, longing, frustration, joy. All the emotions. While this book is fine as a stand-alone novel, I felt like knowing Britt-Marie's backstory made her an even more interesting character. I loved how she could be completely unlikable, yet so funny - and her thoughts (especially those which revolved around Kent) were both maddening and heartbreaking. I have a family member who in some ways reminds me of Britt-Marie - living her life the way she thinks it should be lived, though never really doing any of it for herself. I know some readers might just think she's too unusual to ever warm to her, but I loved her and loved watching her grow into the person she always was but was never given the chance to be. Backman's writing is perfection to me. His use of repetition is just exactly right. Like his other books, I love how certain phrases or ideas appear over and over again without actually being redundant. There were times I highlighted entire pages. I'm actually interested in rereading My Grandmother so that I can focus this time entirely on Britt-Marie and Kent. The soccer part of the book was fine - I'm not a soccer person at ALL, but it didn't detract from the rest of the story. I read this book quickly, and now I can only hope that Fredrick Backman continues to write...because I can't wait to read it all.
