It has been about four years since I last read a YA book, even longer a YA fantasy. I felt like I’d outgrown these books so I was a bit skeptical if I should read Fireborne. I don’t even remember what prompted me to start this a few nights ago, but I remember my friend raving about this last year. I’m so glad I gave this a chance.
THIS is the SUPERIOR dragon book. I’m sorry to everyone whose standards is *that* other book, but that simply doesn’t have a tenth of the quality of Fireborne. THIS is young adult fantasy done right.
I immediately loved that, though the characters are teenagers, their stories felt more mature. There is gravity to their actions and the themes the author tackles don’t seem surface level. The political intrigue, confronting one’s birthright (ahem) and whether claiming it justifies the massacre of entire populations (AHEM), questioning whether one form of tyranny is better than the other…and all of these are just on the large scale. Even the characters’ inner turmoil, about trying to be better than the regime they survived vs their role in the regime they’re currently serving, these are things that are present throughout the book, giving this story more conflict on top of the obvious ones.
Fireborne also doesn’t shy from making the main characters actually morally grey. Like, one minute I want to slap these kids on the face and the next I want to cradle them in my arms.

I’m so excited to read book two 😭 I can’t believe this book wasn’t even remotely on my radar when I was so active in the bookish space 5-6 years ago when this was released. But that’s fine because now I can binge the whole series without waiting!!!
