Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik

4.0

I really enjoyed Spinning Silver! I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator was great. She used subtle differences in accents and tone for the different characters, and made switching between characters easier to follow. If you're looking for a new audiobook, definitely check this one out!

The story was really different than anything I've read in quite awhile. The pacing was slower than most YA I've read, but even though it was slow, it wasn't boring. The world that Naomi Novik created was incredibly fascinating. I loved how it integrated pieces of different cultures, mythologies, and original ideas. The three main characters, Miryem, the daughter of a Jewish moneylender, Wanda, the daughter of an abusive drunk, and Irinia, the daughter of a nobleman, were all strong independent women who took their oppressive situations and turned them around.

There isn't much romance in this story, but I didn't find myself disappointed at all, which is a huge surprise. I think the story was just so interesting and the world was so magical, that it didn't need it. Naomi's writing is so gorgeous, the story just flows, and I can't wait to read more from her. I haven't read UPROOTED yet, but I'm definitely going to be getting the audiobook immediately!
