Speechless. Numb. Sadness. Anger.

That is how I feel after reading this captivating book. I feel I just read a story about a serial killer but not a person instead it is our own judicial system and other entities.

The stories of the individuals in this book are sad, heavy and full of hope. On the first narratives we learn of those sentenced to death who kept fighting until the end and so did their lawyer. In the other side of we also read about teenagers. A lack of good parenting or present parents along with lawyers who didn’t care along our judicial system has contributed to these teenagers now spending their life in prison. As a Latino mother of a teenage boy this was the most challenging part to read in the book. It is heavy and emotionally draining.

The majority of prisoners in these circumstances are black or brown but rarely do we see a white person in this narrative. Mr. Stevenson is a hero in my eyes. Having obtained his Harvard degree he could have chosen to go into a very rich life at a prestigious law firm; instead he chose to advocate for the incarcerated and fight for their rights. His story is one of a superhero.
