Good Material
by Dolly Alderton
I truly hated having to hear Andy whining for 80% of this book.
(The audio was read well though. Just the content was annoying)
Jen’s perspective is the heart of this book and it came WAY too late.
I actually relate deeply to where Jen was coming from. It’s really hard to come to the realisation that the person you’re with and love isn’t the right person for you. Admitting to yourself that you are doing all the work adding value to their day to day while they unintentionally take and give nothing (or very little) back to you is heartbreaking and super depressing to have to address.
Getting to this part of the book finally made it interesting.
But honestly before that it was pretty brutal to have to witness Andy refuse to take accountability for his part in the break up and constantly pine after Jen.
I also didn’t like the fact thathis moment of growth was using the breakup as material for his comedy career? How odd. I found it tasteless, personally. I would have liked it if they could have had an adult conversation about what went wrong. I’ve had to have that conversation before and it’s so hard! It could have been a really poignant for them to come together and realise that the decision to break up was right despite how much it hurts.
I appreciated the commentary around not wanting kids and the pressure around that decision.
