This is the kind of book perfectly described by "rollicking."
It's light and playful, though every now and then the earnestness with which Sanderson pursues whimsy makes it feel self-conscious and a bit forced. There are some wry and humorous observations on people and their motivations which elevate the story from being an extended inside joke. (Though clearly I’m missing many references to Sanderson’s other books.)
The illustrations are lovely, but are blandly romantic--the heroine might be mistaken for a Disney Princess.
