Cold Enough for Snow by Jessica Au

5.0

~ 5 ~

I never anticipated that this seemingly routine 81-page novella- that I casually picked up- would deliver what it did! I truly connected with the narrator, so much so that I was on my toes for the entirety of the book-- constantly thinking about how the author is going to take us through a scene, feeling eager to dissect and understand what she says and how she feels. It was descriptive and thought-provoking, and everything I was looking for to get out of the pool of (sometimes mindless, often feel-good) romcom books I had found myself drowning in.

Au's descriptions of the Japanese countryside, her ability to describe profound but fragile relationships between people, her understanding of art and memories, and her hunger for knowledge had me feeling like I was floating in a dream.

Highly recommend this for anyone looking for a short, quiet book with no real plot but a lot of food for thought!
