Chasing Lucky by Jenn Bennett
4.0

Trigger warnings: vandalism, shitty parents, slut shaming, leaking of nudes, car accident.

I'm still desperate for Jenn Bennett to write something that I love as much as I loved Starry Eyes. Sadly, this wasn't it, although it does have a TON of similarities to Starry Eyes which may be why it didn't quite live up to the hype in my brain...

Anyway, this was a cute romance and - as is always the case with Jenn Bennett - a very sex positive story. Conversations are had. Consent is verbal and enthusiastic. Protection is used. It's sweet and yet not perfect and unrealistic. So I liked all of that and I liked the characters.

But at the same time, this was.........predictable? And I think it's because of the similarities to Starry Eyes.
SpoilerChildhood friends who had a falling out and are reunited. An element of hate to love. A shitty father who turns out to be even shittier than you thought he was. The rich kids who turn out to be absolute doucenozzles and use their privilege to take advantage of the poor working class protagonist and her poor working class love interest.
I just felt like I knew everything that was going to happen before it happened because it was the same thing that happened in Starry Eyes but with different characters and a different setting.

So this was very cute when I read it, and I definitely enjoyed it. But in the two and a bit weeks since I read it, the fact that I had to go and find the review I handwrote in my bullet journal as soon as I finished to even have a vague idea of what happens in the story? Yeah, that doesn't bode well for this being memorable...
