I really enjoy Elise Bryant's voice and it makes it so easy to like her characters, like in her YA novel, as in her YA novel. Reggie and Delilah's Year of Falling. I think I have to truly wrestle with if cozy mysteries are for me, because I've yet to give one 5 stars.

While this was an enjoyable read, the pacing was off for me, with too much going on and too long to get to the crime. As with the first book, Mavis is surrounded by nearly identical white moms, and a little of that goes a long way. I get how ripe they are for satire, but it lead to a feeling of repetitiveness.

This one featured more of specific MLM culture, which brought make some memories. ::Stares off into the distance for an undisclosed time period.:: But also the extreme competitiveness and back-stabbing of the first novel.

At the end of the book there is a sense that the next book might explore more of those waters, but also a sense Mavis could be involved in a different location. I hope for the latter, and to see Mavis interaction with some different people, and none of it in an auditorium.

I'm probably going to keep reading because I have a theory about Mavis, which I'll keep to myself, and I enjoy Elise Bryant's voice and humor so much, but the third book will probably be make it or break it for me on the series, and that's entirely about my figuring out more of my sub-genre preferences.
