The Rose and the Thorn by Michael J. Sullivan
5.0
A bit confused as to why this was volume two when it was clearly a prequel to volume one but it was fantastic! We meet young Reuben Hilford, bullied by nobles with a crush on the young princess. He attempts to defend her and instead is treated with respect by the prince and the Pickerings. Meanwhile, Royce and Hadrian end up saving a bankrupt noble which leads them to Gwen and her past with Royce and a whole plot to kill the king.
Reasons I Recommend:
1) Get to see more of how Royce operates and his “lesson” for Hadrian on trust
2) Meet Arista and Alaric as tweens and
3) See the beginnings of the plot to kill the king.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Quote: “All I can say is you’d better do a good job,” Royce threatened. “If either of them leaves that porch, they’re mine.”
“Royce, they’re not even armed.”
“They have arms—but I’ll remedy that.”
