The Princess Bride by William Goldman

adventurous funny tense fast-paced

4.0

The Princess Bride is one of those classics that I put off for so long which is wild considering how much I love the film.

This novel is a piece of metafiction that uses frame narrative to tell the story. It's an abridged version of fictional author S. Morgernstern's original work and it's done fantastically. This is a lot of fun and I could see the film in my head so vividly during some scenes.

Goldman's italicised commentary throughout on S. Morgenstern's writing choices added some good humour and the action scenes had my eyes fixed on the page. The Princess Bride is fast-paced and filled with adventure so definitely a good read to break a pesky reading slump too!

I think occasionally the commentary sections bordered on too long and there were definitely a few where I thought 'just get on with it' but overall this is a very enjoyable read that I recommend.
