Heartless
by Marissa Meyer
This is one of those books that it seems takes forever to read. I am usually a fan of heavy description, and I do believe that Meyer has created a great depiction of a wonderland, but at times it was too much. There were paragraphs with description with little character action.
I have a love and hate relationship with Catherine. At the beginning, I related to her with the feeling of having to live up to her parents expectations and believing she had to be perfect to gain their love. However, what first rubbed me the wrong way was her constant belittlement of Margaret. I understand she really didn’t like her personality but she always had to comment on her lack of beauty which I found shallow. At the end of the book, her swift change of character was fun to read but very sudden to me. She goes from caring about Mary Ann to despising her and becoming completely merciless. I get it though, trauma.
I loved Jest and Hatta as characters. They were my favorite and I’m disappointed I couldn’t read more about them! I would’ve loved more background on them. What was Chess like? How did they come to serve the White Queen? How did Jest become the royal fool? Jest didn’t have enough character development and it’s heartbreaking. Hatta is that friend that everyone needs in their life. He’s blunt and cynical, but always there for you. His friendship with Jest and how much he cared for him really shined through.
Jest and Catherine’s love story was also not developed enough for me. They’re two people who’ve barely met one another and then all of a sudden they’re in love. Since there was little about Jest’s feelings, I couldn’t really understand what made him fall for Catherine besides that she was “different.” But overall I agree with Hatta in saying she didn’t deserve him. His death is what really got me the most. It was so swift then the story simply moved on. He’s alive then dead in one page. He deserved better!
I would’ve loved to seen Catherine fighting the Red Queen! Originally, what I thought was going to happen is she travels to Chess and defeats the Red Queen, becoming the Red Queen herself and the ruler of Chess. I felt that was something Meyer should’ve pursued to make the story different. I felt the ending was very anticlimactic. Jest dies then she becomes queen. The end.
Overall, I was expecting more from this book.
